KALAMAZOO, MI — West Michigan saw a notably busy severe weather season this spring, with repeated rounds of storms and an unusually early start to tornado activity. The pattern has not been confined to Michigan, as much of the Midwest has been dealing with above-normal tornado counts. Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Wisconsin have each recorded more tornadoes than Oklahoma so far in 2026. Michigan’s total is lower than those states, but forecasters say the year has still been well above average.
Illinois Leads The Nation
Illinois has emerged as the most tornado-prone state so far this year, with its statewide count nearing 200. That total puts it ahead of every other state in 2026 to date, according to the report. The broader regional pattern shows just how active severe weather has been across the Midwest, where several states are outpacing places that are more often associated with tornado activity. The numbers underscore a season that has been especially intense across a wide stretch of the central United States.
Michigan’s 26 confirmed tornadoes also stand out because they are well above the state’s annual average of 15. Most of those storms were relatively weak, rated EF0 or EF1. Still, officials say even lower-rated tornadoes can cause damage when they form quickly within larger storm lines. The early and repeated nature of the outbreaks has been a major part of what made this spring different from a typical year.
Early Start In Michigan
The season got moving early in Michigan, with four confirmed tornadoes in West Michigan on March 6. Among them was the deadly EF3 tornado in Union City, which stood out for both its strength and timing. National Weather Service lead forecaster Ernie Ostuno said that March 6 is earlier than normal for tornado activity in the region. He noted that tornadoes have happened that early before, but said the usual peak does not arrive until the last week of March and April.
The Union City tornado was the earliest EF3 tornado on record in Michigan and the strongest to hit the state since 1977. It was not classified as violent, a designation reserved for EF4 and EF5 storms. Ostuno said that from 1953 through 1977, Michigan saw 19 violent tornadoes, but none have been recorded since. He said this year’s outbreak was close enough to serve as a reminder of how severe spring weather can become in the state.

Ostuno described part of this year’s pattern as tornado swarms, a term used when a line of storms contains small rotating updrafts and embedded supercell thunderstorms. Those systems can produce quick-hitting tornadoes that are often weak, though some can still be significant and damaging. The forecaster said this setup appeared in both this year and last year’s severe weather seasons. He said the storms can move through quickly, making them hard to prepare for in real time.
